North Routt Area

Follow in the footsteps of the earliest pioneers and set up home in North Routt. The area was once home to gold miners, loggers and the first cattle ever to winter in Routt County. The setting is a scenic overload of historic ranchlands and their fields of gold; dense aspen forests and stunning mountain peaks.

Elk River Road (County Road 129) leads north from Steamboat following the Elk River – a popular playground for fishermen and kayakers. The first stop is Clark, a former stagecoach stop in the 1880’s, which now houses a post office, small grocery store and the best ice cream in town. The main road continues onto Hahns Peak a quaint mining base that served as the county seat from 1877-1912.  In recent years, many of the old cabins have been bought and restored bringing the sleepy village back to life.

In the 1950’s the area was revitalized with the creation of Steamboat Lake, making it a magnet for camping and day trips. The elevation is higher than Steamboat, making fall and winter last a little longer.

North Routt is a strong knit community with a mutual respect for privacy and those who want to get away from it all. Homesteads, holiday cabins and single-family homes are the mainstay of accommodation offerings. The North Routt Charter School has an excellent reputation and focuses heavily towards hands on learning.

Surrounded by Routt County National Forest and the iconic backdrop of the Hahns Peak and Mount Zirkel Wilderness, North Routt is the place for those who want to live at the center of nature’s playground.
